The Historic Vehicle Gathering will return to Powderham Castle next month, attracting enthusiasts from all over East Devon.
The event over the weekend of Saturday, July 8 and Sunday 9 is organised by the Crash Box & Classic Car Club of Devon, who are expecting more than 1,500 vehicles to be on display in the castle’s grounds.
The exhibits will include hundreds of classic cars, along with full-size and miniature steamers, commercial and military vehicles and motorcycles, representing more than 110 years of motoring.
Among the attractions will be 70 vehicle club displays, some of which will be commemorating special anniversaries. These include 100 years of MG and Triumph and 75 years of Land Rover, Porsche and the Jaguar XK.
The display by the Motor Cycling Club will also have a special trials car on display. The Cannon sporting trials car was built in the early 1970s and was driven by Stirling Moss (no knighthood back then) in the RAC Trials Championship. It has been lovingly restored to the exact specification when Stirling drove it.
Regular show attendees include Crash Box Club member Dennis Hobbs of Ottery St Mary, who displays his 1968 Triumph TR5. He has owned the car for more than 50 years and refers to as his ‘mistress’.
Asked about the appeal of the annual Historic Vehicle Gathering, he said: “We love the friendship at the event over the two days, and enjoying the many aspects the gathering offers. We have never been disappointed and have made many friends over the years.”
As well as the many vehicles on display there will be a craft marquee featuring the work of local artisans, and roaming live music.
The annual event also raises funds for various local charities, and this year’s will be the Admiral Nurse and Dementia Café (Sidmouth and Sid Valley), Hospiscare (Exeter, Mid and East Devon) and the Motor Neurone Disease Association (Torbay & District).
