The 79th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe has been celebrated at a care home in Didcot.

Alma Barn Lodge Care Home transformed its foyer into a 1940s street party to mark the anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

Residents, staff and their families came together to remember the conflict's end, including former Auxiliary Territorial Service member Lucy.

Lucy recollected the joy of embracing her husband among the VE Day celebrations.

The day kicked off with reflection and reminiscence, followed by a lunch including beef stew and bread pudding, as well as other wartime favourites.

Assistant chef Tracy created a Victoria sponge cake from rationed ingredients to mark the occasion.

Later in the day, a party took place with a singer in 1940s attire performing war-time classics such as 'Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye' and 'We’ll Meet Again'.

Volunteer Kathy Hope, whose mother Audrey Treadgold is a resident at the home, wore 1940s attire as Sally from Masquerade Costume Hire contributed period costumes.

Ms Treadgold, who was 16 at the end of the war, reminisced about neighbours coming together to organise a street party and the wave of euphoria brought about by the prospect of peace.

Home manager Su Heller stressed the importance of preserving the memories of those who lived through the historic period.

Activity coordinator Stephanie Crook described VE Day as emblematic of resilience, unity, and triumph over adversities.
