Dole claimants in Exmouth have risen for the second summer month in a row, a time when casual tourism-based jobs are more common.

New figures for those claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) show a rise in Exmouth of 11, from the end of July to the end of August.

At a district level, East Devon saw the largest increase out of Devon’s eight districts with 13 claimants.

This means Exmouth accounts for most of the total aggregate increase of JSA claimants in East Devon.

JSA figures between June and July in Exmouth rose from 144 to 154 in the EX8 postcode.

This means that 22 more people in Exmouth are claiming JSA than they were before the peak summer season began at the beginning of June.

And most claimants are under the age of 24.

Although the increase seems relatively small, it is of concern because, by contrast, East Devon’s other towns are doing better.

In the past month, JSA claimants have fallen in Ottery St Mary, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth.

Axminster has seen a slight rise, and Seaton has seen six more claims in the last month.

In Exmouth, the biggest rise was at postal addresses in the Littleham area.

There were also increases in Brixington and Withycombe.

Devon County Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, cabinet member for economy and growth, said: “Devon County Council continues to invest in schemes that are seeking to reduce unemployment throughout Devon and provide greater opportunity for our youth, working closely with our Local Enterprise Partnership to drive forward new European funding programmes to improve employability, apprenticeships and skills.”
