It has been confirmed that Exmouth in Bloom will represent the South West in this year’s national Britain in Bloom finals.

Exmouth had been nominated to compete after its success in the 2022 contest, but the Royal Horticultural Society has now announced that it is among the six finalists in the Coastal category.

Exmouth in Bloom say they are ‘thrilled’ to be chosen. A spokesperson said: “Exmouth has been in the National Finals before in 2011 and 2016 but has never won GOLD so that’s  our aim this year.

“We held the fort for the South West in the Large Town category in 2020 and 2021, the two years affected by Covid, when judges weren’t able to visit in person.

“Last year we entered the South West competition and were honoured and completely surprised to not only receive Gold but also the Sponsors’ trophy for the most meritorious entry.

“So we are definitely looking forward to showcasing our work here in Exmouth and crossing our fingers for no cancellation this year!”

Two major projects were planned and completed by Exmouth in Bloom during the two years without judges’ visits.

A roundabout was redesigned with metal weed and fish structures and planting to illustrate where the river Exe used to run right into the town from the estuary.

Also in partnership with Exmouth Art Group, sponsorship from local businesses and huge community support, Exmouth in Bloom created the Sensory Garden on the seafront.

Last year, when the Environment Agency completed two years of work on new sea defences, Exmouth in Bloom was involved with the planning, planting and maintenance of  the barrier areas at the end of Alexandra Terrace.

In last year’s South West in Bloom awards Exmouth achieved record success, receiving Gold and the St Bridget cup for winning the Large Town category; the Barry Cruse trophy for the best website, and the Sponsors’ Trophy. There were also several discretionary awards.

As well as their work planting and maintaining Exmouth’s floral displays and other horticultural features, Exmouth in Bloom have been carrying out several tree planting projects as part of their environmental work.
