More than 400 visitors flocked to the informal opening of Budleigh’s new £2m cricket club on Friday, November 10.

Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club (BSCC) threw open the doors of The Holt, the exciting new venue for cricket and for the community, in a 'sneak peek' event.

The club was overflowing with visitors curious to see the result of years of planning and fundraising. Volunteers were overwhelmed with the positive feedback from those who came along.

BSCC, which relocated as part of the Lower Otter Restoration Project, enjoyed the busiest season of cricket in its history at its new ground this year operating with a marquee as its temporary clubhouse.

Its old ground sits on land deliberately flooded as part of the LORP scheme implemented to protect the town’s coastal defences and improve the natural habitat along the Otter. The move has been made possible thanks to BSCC’s landlords Clinton Devon Estates, who amongst a package of support have provided higher ground for the club’s new home.

Club president Lord Clinton had the honour of pulling the first pint at the opening event.

BSCC chairman Joel Murphy said: “The event was a great opportunity to showcase not only the new clubhouse but the future of the club in general. The huge number of visitors and the very positive vibe was a fitting reward to the club members who have given so much of their time, ideas and energy to make it possible over the past three and a half years."

Clare James, Head of Residential, Land and Tourism, Clinton Devon Estates said: “As president of Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club, Lord Clinton takes a keen interest in the club’s success and was delighted to visit the Holt during the Open Day. He enjoyed a full tour of BSCC’s new home, offering a first class sporting venue and outstanding clubhouse, which will be a fantastic facility for the local community.”

For those who missed the chance to look around on Friday, the club will be open for coffees and cakes from 10am to 12 noon on Tuesdays and Saturdays in December. For information on Club events visit www.budleighcc.co.uk
