McCarthy Stone has revealed the name of its forthcoming development in Exmouth.
The UK's leading developer of retirement communities named its Salterton Road project as The Curlews, paying homage to its namesake waterbird.
This bird, famous for its distinct burbling call, is a common sight on the Exe Estuary's tidal mudflats.
Divisional Marketing Manager for McCarthy Stone, Nicki Beswarick, said: "We are proud to name our new retirement community after such a formidable bird which can be heard echoing across the Estuary and has become a favourite among local birdwatchers during its migration."
Known for their lean, down-curved beak and speckled brown plumage, curlews display wingspans of over a meter.
They flock to Exe's marshes and mudflats in greatest numbers during winter, drawn by plentiful food.
From February, they disperse and return inland to breed in locations such as Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Russia and Poland.
The estuary supports more than 20,000 species of 'wading bird', many of them, like the curlew, rare or endangered.
Mr Beswarick added: "Not only do they symbolise the natural beauty of Exmouth, but they also provide a sense of serenity, making them the perfect inspiration for a retirement community that aims to offer a peaceful and harmonious living experience for its residents."
The over 70s exclusive development will offer residents independence while ensuring round-the-clock support.
Future homeowners will enjoy stylish communal facilities including a lounge, wellness suite, bistro, and beautiful landscaped gardens.
Additional benefits include a guest suite for visitors, a 24-hour support system, video door entry and an intrusion alarm for security.
Situated just two miles from Exmouth’s lively town centre and the scenic Sandy Bay beaches, The Curlews will host 59 one and two-bedroom low-maintenance and energy-efficient apartments.
McCarthy Stone's commitment to customer satisfaction has been recognised with a Five Star award from the Home Builders Federation.
