More than 150 women gathered at the Manor Hotel in Exmouth for the inaugural meeting of a new Women's Institute (WI) group on Wednesday, April 10.

The founders of the group said they want to create ‘a dynamic and inclusive platform for women from all walks of life to come together, share experiences, and contribute to the betterment of their community’.

The inaugural event attracted women from all ages and backgrounds, which the organisers said ‘underscored the universal appeal of the Women's Institute movement, reflecting the rich tapestry of Exmouth's community’.

The formation of the group was the idea of Alison Gater, who moved to Exmouth from the North West three years ago. She hosted the meeting alongside a trio of advisors from the WI Devon Federation. They told the audience the new WI branch will be committed to fostering friendship, education, and community involvement.

Ali said: "Today marks the beginning of an exciting chapter in our community's story. With more than 150 incredible women coming together under one roof, we have laid the foundation for a vibrant and inclusive WI group that will undoubtedly enrich the lives of its members and leave a lasting impact on Exmouth and beyond. Our next two meetings in May and June will dictate the future of this group, but I think we have proven this evening with the immense turnout that there is a real need for this group in our area."

During the meeting, attendees exchanged introductions and shared their aspirations for the newly established group. The organisers said there was ‘an overwhelming sense of enthusiasm and solidarity'.

They said: “From seasoned veterans of the WI movement to newcomers eager to become a part of something new, each woman contributed a unique perspective and a shared determination to make a difference.”

Following the meeting, one attendee posted in the official East Devon Women Facebook group: "I would say judging by the huge response it's definitely something ladies want to see/join.”

The East Devon WI Group says it ‘extends a warm invitation to women aged 18+ across East Devon to join them on their journey of friendship, learning, and community service.

“With a diverse range of activities, workshops, and initiatives planned for the future, there has never been a better time to be part of this inspiring movement.”
