Elite Riding Academy at Bicton preparing young riders

For more than 10 years, Bicton College, which forms part of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), has offered young riders the chance to be part of the Elite Riding programme.

The Academy aids in shaping confident riders who can perform in an intense equine environment.

Admission to the Elite Riding Academy is selective, with only six standout candidates selected each year.

These individuals embark on a transformative journey, receiving extensive training under the academy's experienced equine coaches.

Each year, the chosen six showcase their skills at Bicton Arena, and represent Bicton College at the anticipated daily riding demonstrations at the Devon County Show.

The Academy encourages its students to participate in several events at Bicton Arena to experience the feel of a competition horse and learn how to manage their energy levels.

This hands-on experience fosters a thorough understanding of equine interaction and equips the students with valuable experience for future challenges.

Two years ago, a unique partnership between Bicton Arena and Bicton College emerged, providing students with a platform to exhibit their talent at a top competition centre, a mere five-minute walk from the college.

Darren Evans, head of Bicton College, said: "Our Equine and Animal Management team help our students excel and become some of the most accomplished riders in the region, who not only shine in competitions but also embody the values of integrity, dedication and respect that define true horsemanship."

Bicton Arena manager, Andrew Fell, said: "It’s truly inspiring to witness the dedication and passion these young riders bring to their training sessions and competitions.

"We look forward to watching them grow and take part in our upcoming events, as well as demonstrating their skills at the International Horse Trials."
