A new pottery studio has opened in Exmouth, offering workshops and short courses in clay creations.

Potty and Clod is run by Joy Davis and Chloe Lee, who each have a different set of skills. Joy makes clay sculptures and offers classes where each person will make their own figure or animal. Chloe makes pots, dishes and plates, both hand-building and throwing on a potter’s wheel, and offers courses in these techniques.

Joy and Chloe each have their own websites, Potty Joy and Clod Pots, giving information about their various courses and workshops, which take place at their premises at 46a Rolle Street. The business opened on Friday, May 3, and the first few workshops have been well attended.

Exmouth Journal: A pottery workshop

Joy has been creating pottery for the last 20 years. She’s been a member of Exmouth Ceramic Group for 18 years and their tutor for the last six years. She also works with several local  primary schools, groups such as Brownies and Scouts, and charities.

She said: “My work is fun and whimsical sculptures, lots of mermaids, whales and highland cows.

“I’m offering fun pottery workshops and short courses. You can also book for small groups and pottery parties.”

Chloe has been working with clay for just over five years and said: “I am passionate about making ceramics an accessible space for all to enjoy.

“I have extensive experience working with people with and without disabilities as well as working collaboratively with businesses and charities within the local community.

“I will be teaching some wonderful workshops, I teach groups of between 6-10 people for hand building and 2-4 for throwing, which means I am able to offer lots of 1-1 time within my classes and you can get the most out of your learning in a safe and enriching environment.

“I welcome people of all abilities to come learn, work and collaborate.

“I am super passionate about creating creative spaces that encourage personal growth and enrich our learning experiences and ceramics accessible for all. I am often working on commissions and orders during the week, feel free to pop by and say hello! I always welcome a quick tea break and chat in between making.”
