A 15-year-old girl from Exmouth is about to embark on her second extreme challenge – walking and wild-camping across the entire length of Devon.

Scarlett Calitri-Venables and her mother Lou will set off from Wembury in south Devon early on Sunday, May 26 to trek 188km to Lynmouth in north Devon. They aim to reach their destination on Saturday, June 1.

Two years ago Scarlett and Lou completed the Dartmoor Way, circumnavigating the entire Dartmoor National Park – a total of 108 miles – in five days. They raised £720 for the Disasters Emergency Committee to help the people of Ukraine.

This time the pair are raising money for two charities, Woodcraft Folk and The Word Forest Organisation.

Scarlett said: “Wild camping and hiking are hard because you have to carry nearly everything with you. We are taking some food and will be stopping at villages to stock up when we can. We will be getting water from streams, and using a water filter and tablets.

“My least favourite things about the last challenge were the heavy bags, cold nights, sharing a tiny tent and the sight of massive hills. You get wet and muddy and grumpy on long treks, you have to do tick checking and removal every evening, and you have to find somewhere suitable to sleep every night.

“But it’s always an adventure, and it feels good at the end when you’ve completed it and raised money for charities you like.

"Woodcraft Folk is a co-operative movement for children and young people. They use games, craft, discussion, debate, nature and camping, music and drama to learn about local and global issues (such as climate change, the environment and sustainability). They help their young members to develop their own ideas, their self-confidence and their skills, so they can take an active role in shaping our world and their future.

"The Word Forest Organisation is an environmental and education charity based in the UK, which works to combat the effects of climate change by planting fast-growing (mostly food-bearing) trees in the tropics, where trees grow up to 10 times faster than anywhere else on the planet, helping to mitigate climate change at a pace. They also support women’s empowerment, build classrooms and facilitate education in those local communities, and raise environmental awareness and plant trees within the UK too."
