A former builder died when he was struck by a passing train near Topsham station.

James Robb, from Exeter, suffered severe head and chest injuries when he was hit by the train on the nearby level crossing on June 4.

An inquest was opened this week on the  84 year old retired builder and the coroner was told James was 'seen by the side of the railway tracks' before he moved in front of a moving train.

A full hearing will be held at a later date.

A person died following an 'emergency incident' at Topsham Train Station on Tuesday afternoon (June 4).

Devon and Cornwall Police, the British Transport Police and emergency services were called at around 1pm following reports of a casualty on the train line.

Police have confirmed that a person was pronounced dead at the scene. All trains were cancelled to Exeter and Exmouth via Topsham after GWR reported an 'emergency incident' near Topsham station.

Great Western Railway trains were been cancelled, delayed or revised while emergency services deal with the incident.
