Budleigh Salterton’s Community Larder has been refurbished thanks to a grant from a charity.
Now based in Wesley’s, the community café run by Launchpad in partnership with Temple Methodist Church, the updated larder will continue its mission, thanks to Hubbub.
The larder was set up in August 2017 to redistribute surplus food and prevent it from going to waste.
Carpenter, Graham Bastone volunteered his time outside of business hours to ensure the refurbishment was completed with minimal disruption.
Launchpad director, Carole Brown, said: "The larder started small, but now, thanks to all the support of retailers, the Budleigh Salterton Lions Club and other volunteers, the community larder prevents over 1 tonne of food a month from going to waste, which is amazing!"
Starting September 2, the larder will be open two hours daily for anyone interested in helping reduce food waste.
The opening hours will be posted at Wesley’s and on social media.
In addition to redistributing surplus food, the larder hosts a weekly pop-up pantry in partnership with Exmouth Food Bank, offering affordable staple foods to families needing extra support.
Completely managed by volunteers, the larder's success stems from the contributions of Budleigh Salterton Lions Club, food donations from Co-op, Tesco’s, Shaldon Bakery and East Budleigh Community Shop and financial aid from Budleigh Lions Club, The Fryer Trust, Budleigh Town Council, the Former Little Otters Pre-school group and churches in the area.
