Exmouth regatta draws crews from across UK and France

The event on Saturday, September 28, welcomed clubs from across the UK and even Thonon-les-Bains, France.

The home regatta enjoyed fine weather, a friendly neap tide, and unusually calm waters.

Crews from Carrick Falmouth, Mayflower Plymouth, Torquay RC, Teign Scullers, Exmouth RC, Coastal Barbarians, the Coastal Rowing Academy, and Dolphin RC, competed, alongside special guests from as far as Runcorn, Dover, and Folkestone.

Exmouth's winning novice crew included two 14-year-olds, while the mixed doubles (60+) was won by Exmouth’s pairing of Anne Jordan, 60, and club chairman, Richard Robinson, 70.

The race between quads over the Langstone Approach course saw some tight finishes, with one crew winning by just one second.

The singles and doubles had to navigate around the quads and a colourful Exe Sailing Club dinghy regatta as they rounded the eight buoys to and from the Fairway deep watermark.

Three safety boats ensured no capsizes needed rescuing, and the only collision was a bruise to navigational pride rather than delicate boats.

The top three club positions went to Mayflower in third, Exmouth RC in second, and Coastal Barbarians, with 96, 75, and 39 points respectively.

Club captain, Jon Houghton, said: "We are particularly proud to have upheld Exmouth RC’s reputation as a friendly, welcoming, and inclusive club.

"We are very much looking forward to the season’s final regattas at Teignmouth and Torquay on October 12 and 26."
