We have seen a few unusual fish around our coastline this year and this week we have another.
Paul Millman was using a Dexter Wedge when the lure was hit by a Sunfish. A visitor from warmer waters, which was quickly weighed and released, it weighed in at 62lbs. Paul has also managed a shore session this week and landed the best of this year’s Gilthead Bream weighing a magnificent 6lbs 6oz.
A group of Torbay anglers headed North to the Skerries Banks, where plenty of Pollack to around 3lbs were caught along with Rays to 15lbs, with Kev Madeley taking the only Smooothhound of the trip on Mackerel strip and a 1`2lbs8oz Bull Huss to Charlie Capewell. Torquay’s Marcus Ward took his Kayak to one of our estuaries, where he found Gilthead Bream up to 2lbs and Thornback Rays up to 7lb.
From the shore, Russel Farley found several hungry Bull Huss eager to take his baits from a local rock mark. He landed fish up to 10lbs 7oz, returning all to fight another day. Will Booth and a group of friends travelled to the Somerset reefs targeting Smoothounds and were successful with fish into low double figures.
Junior Angler Harvey Cockram fished the River Teign using ledegered peeler crab targeting Bass and was rewarded for his efforts with a lovely fish weighing 4lbs10oz.
With Mackerel being caught around the coast, a friend and I decided on a short session at Brixham Breakwater to get a few for the BBQ. We managed to get enough and with a few ragworms in my tackle bag, I decided I would try something different.
Those who know me have seen me fishing with light gear on many occasions but this time I fished ultra-light with a 0 –10 gram LRF rod. I baited a size 12 hook with a small piece of the worm and fished close in around the rocks and had a very pleasant hour catching small Ballan and the beautifully marked Corkwing Wrasse which fought hard. This is a method that I will try again and would recommend to anyone.
