In the Eastern Division of the Devon Women’s Football League, Budleigh Salterton Ladies continued merrily marching on with their 14th league victory of the campaign.
To accomplish this, they had to overcome a very stubborn Crediton United Ladies squad who refused to lie down, with the game going to the wire, keeping the very large crown enthralled until the final whistle.
With the home supporters cheering them on, Crediton were first on the attack, but all attempts to score failed because of goalkeeper Jordyn Ward and her defenders.
Budleigh were beginning to string some passes together themselves, and took the lead on 12 minutes, Suzy Osborne heading home from a Kirsty Brown corner.
The game continued to flow from end to end with chances being created and missed. In the latter part of the half the ball fell to Tahla Williams, whose lob floated over home gloves-person Louise Waldron into the net, making it 2-0 to Budleigh.
The second half was only a couple minutes old, and another lob, this one brilliantly executed from a direct free-kick by Chey Coakley, and Crediton were back in the game.
A Lucy Burch run down the wing and centre was put away by Chelsea Leggett, 3-1 to the Robinettes. Crediton were far from finished, forcing several corner kicks, and who should head in one of these, an “ex-Robinette” Erica Guppy, reducing the score to 2-3, and a tense finish, where everyone on the pitch worked hard, and were applauded at the final whistle.
Meanwhile, the Budleigh Salterton Veterans Reds came home from Otterton with an excellent 4-0 victory in the Devon County Vets League, with Danny Williams scoring twice and further strikes by Dan Atkinson and Matt Burns.
By doing so, they finished top of the Devon County Veterans League table consisting of 23 teams. This, however, does not make them League Champions “yet”, as there is still another phase to go through.
The first phase saw the 23 teams divided into groups. The second phase brings a knock-out quarter-final draw of the top 8 (eight) teams from the 23, then semi-final and eventually the final.
