One competition played earlier in the season was the Australian Spoons and this was won by Sandra Morton and Mary Knight. They went through to the regional final played at Yeovil Golf Club, winning through to the National final. This will be played on 10th August at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, and we wish them continuing success.
The Still Cup team played a home match against Stover and a commendable draw in high winds, while Presidents 1 team played the Woodbury ladies at home and had a 3-2 win. Our Presidents 2 team played Honiton ladies at Honiton, losing 3-2, then had the return game at home within the fortnight, winning 3 ½ - 1 ½.
Under the auspice of Devon Golf, Anne Boyle and Hilary Shiels represented the East Devon Ladies playing for the Willes-Little Trophy against Holsworthy at Crediton, a match that they narrowly lost.
Annodata ladies, Sally Underwood, Jo Goldsworthy, Nina Hawkins, Sarah Jones and Helen Chivers, played their Round 3 match at home against Saunton with a very impressive 5-0 victory against a strong visiting team.
Sue Harrison and Jane Atkins played in the Devon Golf Vets Knockout, winning their match. Their next round will be against either Okehampton or Dainton before the end of August.
Meantime, we played a ladies friendly match at Exminster against a very hospitable group of their members, resulting in a close result just going to East Devon.
Amongst all of these matches we play our usual Tuesday medals, Stablefords and social games. Organiser Carolyn John had us playing in teams of four with Nicola Lowe, Sue Loynes, Marilyn Hobbs and Linda Anderson topping the table with 110 points between them, followed by second and third placed teams with 105 and 104 points each.
The Ladies Section hosted our second Open competition, a 4 ball team stableford, and 24 teams entered. We have a custom that East Devon ladies only enter an Open with visiting players in order to reduce ‘course knowledge’ advantage. However, it was pleasing that, out of the seven best scores, five of these included an East Devon player. Sally Rex took first place with her three visitors from Surrey clubs, congratulations to all.
