East Devon golf course has transformed itself from rock hard ground to a landscape that could encourage families of ducks to set up home.
However, happily, it is one of the best draining courses in the County so normally we don’t remain waterlogged for too long.
This week’s Ladies competition on Tuesday encompassed a mix of competitions, starting with the Spring Meeting Foursomes, a pairs competition playing Stableford scoring based on half the pair’s combined handicap.
Winning by a clear point with 38 points, Janet Briggs and Heather Coles were top of the leaderboard, followed by Joy Wisdom and Ali Miller on 37 (back 9, 20 points) and Jane Williams and Marilyn Hobbs in third spot with 37 points (back 9, 19 points).
Included in this game were two Devon County Veteran Ladies Golf Association (DCVLGA) qualifying events: the Killard Leavy Trophy and the Autumn Foursomes, as well as the Devon Golf Express and Echo Foursomes.
Joy Wisdom and Ali Miller will go forward to play other Devon pairs later in the season, having won this event at East Devon with 37 points.
For the DCVLGA Autumn Foursomes Joy and Ali will play, joined by Barbara Mellor and Peggy Lomas came in with 35 points. Play for the winning pair of the Express and Echo Foursomes will take place on 9th September at Exeter Golf and Country Club.
Still within DCVLGA, representing East Devon in the DCV Interclub Knockout were Jane Atkin and Sue Harrison with a first-round match against Yelverton GC, played on a neutral course at Torquay Golf Club. Their opponents were Mair Preston Jones and Diane Reardon in a Four-Ball Better-Ball Matchplay.
Played in extremely cold and blustery conditions with 50mph winds, was very tight with neither pair ever more than two holes ahead. Our East Devon ladies won two up on the 17th hole. The match was played in great spirit and Sue and Jane go through to round two.
Finally, one of our ladies, Nina Hawkins, must be congratulated for a hole in one in a social game on April 22 – such a great feeling.
