Topsham were grateful for a superb first 40 minutes of rugby as they withstood a late fightback from Paignton to secure an engrossing 43-38 victory.
In a pulsating first period, Topsham raced into a 33-7 lead and were dominating all departments, but Paignton responded with admirable spirit to eventually go down by a single score. The five bonus points ensured Topsham maintain their two-point lead at the top of the table and next face Bideford at home.
The Topsham tries were scored by Will Loughton (2), Ethan Bernaschone, Dan Mather, Joe Cockram, Wes Keywood and Raf Zappia, with George Holwill adding four conversions.
Also at the top of the division, Cullompton secured a solid 45-20 victory at Wiveliscombe and will travel to Paignton this weekend. Topsham’s next challengers, Bideford, had the day off last Saturday, as their scheduled opponents, Falmouth, were unable to raise a side.
