Two Madeira ladies teams played each other for a place in the finals of the DCLIBA Rinks, with Madeira being honoured to host those finals on the weekend of March 18/19.
The game played at Honiton was most enjoyable to watch but the more experienced team came out on top having made a good start, so Sue Harriott playing with Christine Macaulay, Penny Preece and Janine Orchard have reached the final. It was an excellent experience at this level for the runners-up – Jenny Charles and her team of Myra Furminger, Ann Maloney and Dee Williams.
The same weekend 16 bowlers and some significant others set off for a bowling mini break at the Toorak in Torquay. Susie Roughton, the organiser, was thanked with a presentation on their behalf by Carole Worth. They bowled four rinks against Fairford on three occasions but Fairford proved to be the stronger team – Madeira won four games with teams skipped by Carole Worth and Annette Bister.
The ladies representative team played their last game of the season in the Foxlands League and were delighted with their win of 67 shots to 58 - the two away teams winning and narrow losses at home. T
Three mixed triples teams enjoyed a closely-fought home game against South Hams which they won overall by 60 shots to 55 although South Hams won on two rinks. The best shot difference of the day of plus 14 was achieved by Angie Fish and her team of Alan Porter and Lyn Hambly.
There were home and away triples games for the men and ladies respectively against Honiton. The men, at home, won on two rinks but the overall score was a draw of 41 shots with Vic Doidge and his team having the best shot difference for the home team of plus 5.
The ladies had an equally close encounter at Honiton. Honiton achieved 47 shots to win at home against Madeira ladies a couple of weeks ago and they strangely totted up 47 shots on this occasion, but this time Madeira won by 5 shots. They were helped by a strong game from Janine Orchard and her team of Merrill McKenna and Sandy Worcester. It was good to have Merrill in the team – she is new to Madeira - and also Vicky Pardy playing her first friendly fixture.
