Exmouth headed into this game with Weston-super-Mare knowing that a good win would secure their place on Regional 1 South West League next term.
The Cockles delivered a 10-try blitz securing the bonus point win before half-time. It was a miserable day for Weston and a performance could resign the Seasiders to playing in the division below next season as they sit two places off the foot of the table, but the sides below them, Old Centralians and Drybrook, have games in hand.
Tries from Max Keen (2), Robbie Weeks (2), Connor O’Shaughnessy, Matty Ryan, Jack Madge, George Mears, Ben Hawley and Finn Musgrove, plus 18 points from the boot of Sam Whitehead, completed the final score, 68-14. Weston replied with tries in each half from Ben Cox and Gary Carpenter, James Mackay conversions.
Weston hit a full force Cockles coming the other way, in fact there could have been several more Exmouth scores but for dropped balls or missed try line opportunities. The tries were scattered across forwards and backs. A largely young side brimming with confidence, the Cockles opened their box of tricks for the delight of the big crowd.
Two home games remain in the League, still plenty to play for. On Saturday, March 11, the visitors are Ivybridge, the home side seeking to overturn an early season loss.
This is followed by Okehampton in a rearranged game on March 18, which will also double up as a Devon Cup pool game. Please join the Cockles for some cracking match-day action.
Team. Jack Madge, Will Ridout, Gareth Walker, Archie Cruze, Jack Hamilton, Connor O’Shaughnessy, Max Keen, Ben Hawley, Matty Ryan, Sam Whitehead, James Clarke, Dave Bargent, Nick Headley, George Mears, Robbie Weeks. Reps. Brad Skinner, Liam Bayley, Finn Musgrove.
Exmouth Quins lost out to South Molton first-team. Big thanks to the boys who travelled, some playing out of position with a few lads missing. South Molton were in fine form on the day. Next up for the Quins, Ivybridge 2nd Team on the road, while the Nomads take on Ilfracombe at home on Saturday.
