Topsham Rugby Club has enjoyed a week of celebration after they were crowned champions of the Tribute Western Counties 1 Division, sealing the title and promotion with a superb 43-24 victory at Pirates Amateurs in Penzance.
The equation on the day was simple for Topsham, as they knew victory would be enough for the title. The Pirates, however, are a notoriously powerful and physical outfit, keeping the deficit down to just five points at the break.
Topsham responded with the enterprising rugby that has been their benchmark all campaign to race away with the win in the second half. Pat Gibbs was imperious with the boot and tries came from Dan Lock (2), George Holwill (2), Aled Rosser and Henry Batty.
There was further recognition for the club with five players (Ethan Bernaschone, Tom Oxland, Joe Cave, Pat Gibbs, George Holwill) representing Devon in the Tamar Cup, although Cornwall were victorious on the day.
