Just over a fortnight ago, Torquay United were seemingly doomed to relegation from the National League.
The Gulls were nine points from safety and faced a very tough schedule heading into the Easter weekend. A 1-0 win at play-off chasing Boreham Wood came from nowhere and Torquay then won a massive relegation six-pointer at Scunthorpe, who have since joined Maidstone as the two teams definitely going down.
Despite those morale-boosting displays, Torquay were still languishing in the drop zone when high-flying Eastleigh visited on Good Friday. Once again, however, the Gulls found a top performance to triumph 2-0.
Now riding an incredible wave of optimism, the Gulls outclassed Maidenhead to win 3-1 on Monday, with influential recent signing Frank Nouble scoring twice. In an astonishing turnaround, Torquay are now two points behind Aldershot in the ‘safety zone’ and face another huge game at Plainmoor on Saturday, when struggling York City are the visitors.
