Plymouth Argyle have confirmed promotion to the Championship after a tense 1-0 victory over Burton Albion at a packed Home Park.
The pre-match atmosphere was electric and the Pilgrims knew the task ahead of them. Victory would confirm a return to the second tier after a 13-year absence. Argyle could also achieve their aim if Sheffield Wednesday failed to win at Shrewsbury Town.
As it turned out, Wednesday cruised to victory and with Ipswich hitting six past Exeter City, the Greens had to win.
In a first half lacking clear-cut chances, the decisive moment arrived on the stroke of half-time, when Niall Ennis jinked inside from the right and fired a deflected shot into the Burton net.
After the break, Argyle created more chances to confirm the win but were unable to convert. Thankfully for the Pilgrims, Burton Albion lacked the penetration to hurt a defence that has been so impressive all season.
Promotion was confirmed on the final whistle, sparking scenes of jubilation at Home Park, and a fantastic achievement for the club that almost went of business in 2011 and has been stabilised by the outstanding leadership of chairman Simon Hallett.
Argyle manager Steven Schumacher told BBC Sport: "I'm overjoyed and delighted. It's been an amazing season, an amazing campaign and to finish it off here on a sunny day in Devon in front of our home fans is just amazing.
"I'm just so proud for everybody associated with the club that we've managed to get over the line.
"We've set out and achieved the goal that we wanted to do and I couldn't be any prouder.
"The standard that's been set at the top end of League One this year has been nothing short of amazing.
"Big congratulations to Ipswich Town who've also sealed their automatic promotion today, they've been brilliant to watch, and commiserations to Darren Moore and Sheffield Wednesday and Michael Duff at Barnsley.
"The relentless pace and the relentless nature that all of the teams have set has just made you work so hard."
Well done to Argyle.
