The summer campaign is finally underway at East Devon Golf Club and the ‘Start of Season’ events teed off in style, with a medal followed by a foursomes two days later.
Despite saying May on the calendar, the weather for the medal was truly ghastly, with the course being closed by fog for a short while then, after reopening, with thunder and lightning that could be heard, although not overhead.
Nevertheless, many ladies continued their games and Claire Dowling won best gross score with an 84 and Hilary Shiels the best nett with 74. Congratulations (and respect) to both of these players.
The foursomes winners on a kinder day and a more relaxed format, were Sally Rex and Jane Ellen with 39 points, four ahead of Anne Boyle and Rowan Edbrooke, who took second place. This competition was followed by presentations to the winners of the winter competition programme.
In the meantime, East Devon GC teams of ladies will be playing in the following Devon inter-club competitions:
The Still Cup where players play off scratch, and East Devon have been drawn in a group that also includes Stover GC, Tavistock GC, Teignmouth GC and Torquay GC.
The Presidents Cup with players whose handicaps usually fall in Division 1 (two teams). East Devon 1 are in a group with Honiton GC, Sidmouth GC and Teignmouth GC, while East Devon 2 will play against Churston GC, Dainton Park GC, Torquay GC and Woodbury Park GC.
The Sheelah Creasy Cup with players whose handicaps usually fall in Division 2 and higher. In this competition, East Devon will face teams from Downes Crediton GC, Honiton GC, Tiverton GC and Woodbury Park GC in the group phase.
East Devon also have a Ladies team entered into the Annodata competition, a nationwide competition for all golf clubs to field a team if they wish. This prestigious competition holds the semi finals and finals in Spain.
After first matches for all the teams, the ladies have returned excellent wins overall and the Still Cup team played their second match last week, again achieving a great win. The club will be hoping that their team players can maintain their achievements and wish them every success.
