The bowlers of Budleigh Salterton have been racking up the victories over the past week, starting with the annual Mixed Triples in Sidmouth
At halfway, Budleigh held an overall lead of 41-20, largely thanks to the Budleigh team of Rosemary Carter, Chris Knight and Andy Skudder, who held a lead of 14-3. After a quick refresh, the match finished with victories for three of the Budleigh teams, and an overall win of 83-51.
Budleigh continued their winning streak when they played a visiting Mixed Triples team from Honiton. Evelyn Crook, Norman Upchurch and Penny Weeks got away to a flying start in their game and were never behind the opposing trio. On the 13th end, they achieved a magnificent five shots and won overall by 19-10.
Marilyn Foreman, Paul Davis and fairly new member Chris Knight were also enjoying a narrow lead until Honiton scored six shots on the 12th end, leaving the teams level. This jolted Budleigh into action and they went on to win 19-14. Despite losing the third game 19:12, the overall result was a win for Budleigh of 50-43.
Chris Knight commented: “I joined Budleigh Bowls Club a few weeks ago and I am thoroughly enjoying the friendly atmosphere of these inter-club games. I hope to be selected for many more!”
On Saturday, Budleigh hosted a Mixed Triples match against a team of 12 players from Chardstock. This was the return match following Budleigh’s win at Chardstock in May. After 9 Ends, and a break for tea, the match was fairly even with Chardstock holding a narrow winning margin of just eight shots.
Following the break, Budleigh moved ahead in three of the games, with star performances from the teams of Annie Clarke, Tony Mackness( Club Captain) and John Sheppard, who achieved a victory 20:10 and Annie Clarke, Ralph Cartwright and Bryan Membery, who won 18:10.
Meanwhile in the fourth game, the Chardstock team of Jen Porter, Eileen Ralph and Vaughan Fletcher enjoyed a convincing victory of 23-7. The overall result was a narrow victory for Budleigh by 60 shots to 57.
Gilly Campbell the Chardstock Captain commented: “We always enjoy our yearly visit to Budleigh and it is good to meet up with old friends.”
