They may be the ‘old rivals’ from down the road but everyone in East Devon is congratulating Sidmouth Cricket Club on reaching an incredible milestone.
Founded in 1823, Sidmouth CC is 200 years-old this year and their ground, the Fort Field took its name from the small fort at the southern edge. After surviving financial struggles in the 1840s, Sidmouth CC flourished again and the pavilion was built in 1879.
The cub expanded to welcome a Lawn Tennis Club in 1881 and the Croquet Club joined a growing sporting family in 1907.
A Trust was established in 1937 and the Fort Field was purchased from Colonel Balfour in 1937 and there were further expansions in the 1960s and 1980s. A hockey section was briefly added but cricket has always been the beating heart of the Fort Field, and long may it continue.
