The annual Peter Nelson Shield competition was held at Phear Park on Saturday and, as always, it was a fabulous exhibition of bowls.
The round-robin style match involved 24 bowlers in teams of three playing 18 ends. The winners this year were John Horne, Bob Pemberton and Mo Bond, receiving the shield from the Club President Liz Nelson.
The Peter Nelson Shield is named after the Phear Park stalwart and legend, who captained the club for many years. His place in the history of Phear Park is cemented forever, and a fantastic legacy for a club that can trace its roots back to the 1890s.
A bowls green opened at the Park in 1911 and Phear Park BC was one of the first 20 clubs to affiliate to the Devon County Bowling Association. It has been a wonderful ride ever since and the Peter Nelson Shield remains a summer highlight.
