Exmouth Harriers were involved in a variety of local running events in the last week, starting with eight of them in a very fast 5km run at Exwick in a torrential rainstorm, writes Des White.
Despite the torrid conditions, the Harriers adjusted superbly to the new challenge, with four of then taking first place in their respective age groups.
Run Exe 5km: 7th Oli White 15.50 1st M35, 66th Craig Butler 19.36 3rd M50, 75th Hannah Bown 20.06 1st W40, 86th Jimmy Joy 20.55 2nd M60, 102nd Steve Morgan 22.17 1st M65, 103rd Andy Johnson 22.25 6th M55, 109th Scott Jordan 23.32 6th M50, 128th Alison White 27.18 1st W65.
Three Harriers ran together in Exeter’s Green Lantern; a circular 14 mile run which follows the Green Circle clockwise around Exeter, through wooded valleys, meadows, bicycle lanes and the banks of the Exe.
The Exmouth trio of Kay Douglas, Susan Douglas and Louise Hempstead all finished together, and inside the top 60, in a time of 2.39.59.
Two Harriers competed in the popular Totnes 10km race that is mostly off road and that followed alongside the beautiful River Dart, starting and finishing in Borough Park. The evergreen Hugh Marsden finished first M60 and 46th overall in a time of 51.09, while Dawn Teed was 7th W60 in 73.04.
A total of 32 runners, including 13 Harriers ran in a “social” running / walking event jointly hosted by Budleigh Runners & Exmouth Harriers in aid of Exmouth RNLI. There was a choice of 11-mile or five-mile courses taking in the Budleigh Cycle Trail and the South West Coast path.
The event coincided with the Exmouth RNLI Open Day, everyone finished at the Lifeboat station on Exmouth seafront and they were cheered as they crossed the finish line by the RNLI volunteers, with current donations for the Exmouth RNLI standing at almost £500.
Harriers running for Exmouth RNLI included: Alison White, Lisa Hatchard, Lisa Boyd, Derek Johnson, Jason Hill, Nigel Dupain, Jill Dupain, Craig Butler, Adrian Barton, Kevin Doyle, Neil Collins, Amy Tew and Harriet Lyons.
One date for the running diary is the Bideford 10-miler on Sunday, November 5, hosted by Bideford AAC, and a delightful course taking in the views of the Taw and Torridge estuary.
