East Budleigh produced a wonderful team display to beat Newton St Cyres last Saturday with Jack Greenslade bagging a brace in a 4-0 win in Division 1 of the Devon and Exeter League, writes Mark Auton.
The Jays were at it from the start and went ahead after four minutes, when Louis Adey showed tenacity to win the ball back before teeing up Greenslade for his first.
Just five minutes later, a good team move involving Sam Balbi, Brad Hill and Adey led to Greenslade firing in his, and Budleigh’s, second.
Budleigh continued to dominate with Player of the Match Rian Hill and Adam Wilkinson controlling the midfield and Brad Hill tormenting the visiting defence with his pace. At the other end Balbi, Callum Liddle, Hugo Demetre and Guy Laverock defended well as a unit, ably supported by goalkeeper Jack England.
Just after the hour, the Newton ‘keeper was unable to hold a shot from Adey, as Budleigh deservedly went three ahead. The fourth for Budleigh came courtesy of Jack Howarth, who finished well after Greenslade and Wilkinson had combined.
This Saturday, Budleigh entertain Uplyme in the Devon Senior Cup.
There was a welcome three points for East Budleigh Reserves, who battled to a fine win against the University students by the odd goal in five.
Tom Christian curled home a smart free-kick to give Budleigh the lead before the hosts drew level soon after.
It was 2-1 to Budleigh before the break when Player of the Match Brendan Hood produced a cheeky back heel to fool his marker before firing a left foot shot into the net.
In the second half, the students levelled for the second time with a free-kick of their own, but it was Budleigh who went on to win. Liam Damant chased down the home defence and was rewarded when a defender handled in the box.
Dan Atkinson stepped up to convert from the spot and seal the win for a Budleigh side, who are away at Sidmouth this Saturday.
