The South West Peninsula League is in danger of turning into a procession for Ivybridge Town, as they moved 11 points clear at the top of the East division with a 2-0 win over second-placed Bridport on the weekend.
Jack Alexander and Josh Zimmerman scored the goals for the Ivies, who travel to Bishops Lydeard on Saturday. The Bishops will be desperate for a response after a 4-0 loss at home to Okehampton Argyle, Luke Mortimore and Josh Coles both notching braces for the Okes.
At the bottom of the table, Torridgeside opened up a seven-point gap on struggling Dartmouth with a 2-1 victory over the Darts, who have yet to record a league win this season. Rory Paine and Shaun Copp were on target for the T-Siders.
In the other games, Ollie Aplin, Alangel Joseph, Callum Leech, Neil Last and Lee Hildreth all hit the net for Bovey Tracey, as they trounced Teignmouth 5-1. Newton Abbot Spurs defeated Torrington 2-0 and it was a disappointing result for Honiton Town, as they were comfortably beaten, 4-1 at Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police.
While the SWPL has become stretched at the top, the Devon Football League remains insanely close, with just six points separating the top nine clubs.
The University of Exeter are top of the pile, with Lakeside Athletic and North Molton the closest pursuers. The team to watch, however, could be Beer Albion, who climbed to fourth with a solid 3-1 win at Topsham Town on Saturday. Josh French, George Richards and Finn Rooke were on target for Beer.
Feniton remain rooted to the bottom, despite a valiant display at home to Mount Gould. Tariq Gasmi and Tommy Frost hit the net for Fenny but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat. Ottery St Mary missed the chance to join the top ten, as they were beaten 3-1 at Thorverton.
On the professional scene, Exeter City are dropping like a stone in Sky Bet League One. A disappointing 3-0 loss at struggling Fleetwood leaves the Grecians just one point above the drop zone.
There was a big win for Torquay United in the National League South, as they defeated Havant & Waterlooville 2-0, while Plymouth Argyle fought bravely before losing 2-1 at Leeds United.
The Devon duo of Tiverton Town and Plymouth Parkway are stuck in the bottom four of the Southern League Premier Division, although both sides have two games in hand on the teams immediately around them.
Tivvy shared a tense 0-0 draw with Harrow Borough on Saturday, another team scrapping for points at the bottom, but there was a dramatic late triumph for Parkway at fourth-placed Walton & Hersham.
Parkway were on course for victory thanks to an early penalty from Shane White but the home side levelled in the final minute. Incredibly, there was one more twist, as Dylan Jones struck a winner for Parkway deep into stoppage time.
In the big match at the top of Division One South, Willand Rovers were knocked off their perch after a 3-0 defeat at Frome Town, who moved above Rovers on goal difference. Wimborne Town lead the way by two points.
A last-minute winner from Liam Prynn handed Tavistock an entertaining 3-2 victory at Bristol Manor Farm. Prynn’s early strike and an own goal had given Tavvy a 2-0 lead but they were pegged back by the hosts before the late intervention for the poacher Prynn.
Tavvy are just one point outside of the play-off position and level on points with Bideford and Mousehole. All three teams have games in hand, which could see them jump into the top five.
It continues to be a tough season for Exmouth Town, who are five points adrift at the bottom, although they will take great encouragement from a 1-1 draw with Westbury United. Exmouth were three minutes away from the win before conceding a late leveller.
