‘Game off’ was trending on Twitter, aka X, all weekend and it was a trend that extended to Devon football, with waterlogged pitches decimating the schedule.

For those games that did go ahead, Tiverton Town were one of the sides smiling in the mud, as they recovered from an early setback at home to Bracknell Town to pinch all three points in the final minute.

After incredible work by the groundstaff to make the pitch playable, Bracknell demonstrated their gratitude with an opener inside two minutes, Jordan Espirit slotting past an exposed Zak Baker in the home goal.

The howling wind hardly helped matters but River Allen’s cross for Josh Jones to head against the post defied the elements. Man of the match Dylan Jones followed up with a close-range effort turned over the bar by the visiting custodian.

Niall Thompson forced the next save, as Tivvy piled on the pressure, a pattern that continued with another thwarted effort from Jones early in the second period. Finally, the breakthrough arrived on the hour, when a free-kick from Allen proved too strong for the overworked Bracknell ‘keeper.

Tivvy continued peppering the visiting goal but it seemed like they would have to settle for a point. That was until Jack Rice-Lethaby popped up in stoppage time to score a winner that sparked huge scenes of celebration.

The result moved Tiverton into the relative safety of mid-table and four points clear of the relegation places.

Unfortunately, Devon delight was not shared by Willand Rovers in the league below, as they slipped to a 3-0 defeat at Malvern Town. The Willand wheels have slipped off recently and they now find themselves a point outside the play-off places.

It was a big day for Southern League Frome Town in the FA Trophy, as they welcomed Torquay United. Frome performed admirably against their full-time visitors but, despite deploying a young side, Torquay had enough firepower to triumph 4-1.

In the Football League, Plymouth Argyle tasted the full force of a Leicester City side seemingly powering to a swift return to the Premier League. The Pilgrims were swept aside by three goals in the space of six minutes to lose 4-0 in the Midlands.

Exeter City have endured a horrible run of form but they can count themselves unlucky to have lost 1-0 at home to fellow strugglers Port Vale. The Grecians controlled much of the play, created some good chances but luck is against them at the moment.

Two Devon clubs suffered home defeats in the Toolstation Western League, as Brixham were beaten by promotion-chasing Clevedon Town and Ilfracombe Town just came up short against leaders Helston Athletic, losing 1-2 in a tight game.

Barnstaple Town did bring some local cheer, as they won 3-2 at Wellington. After falling behind in Somerset, Barum fought back with goals from Tor Swann, Harvey Dorothy and Matt Bye to lead 3-1, Wellington’s late second proving a consolation.

The South West Peninsula League was a complete washout but four games did survive in the Devon Football League. The University of Exeter returned to the top with an 8-0 demolition of Ipplepen, Callum Chalmers bagging a hat-trick for the students.

Feniton earned just their second point of the season with a determined display at Plymouth Marjon, drawing 1-1 in horrible conditions, while goals from James Giffard and Jack Moses secured North Molton a 2-1 victory at Budleigh Salterton.

Beer Albion moved up to fourth in a crazy game at Plymstock. Aaron Daniels notched a hat-trick and there was a double for Josh French, as Beer ran out 8-3 winners.

Across the nine division of the Devon & Exeter League, only eight games were played but one of them carried huge significance, as Sandford inflicted a first defeat of the season on Premier Division champions Alphington, beating the leaders 2-1 to keep things tight at the top.
