Withycombe slumped to a 12-0 defeat at home to South Molton in their first outing of 2024.
The cold weather may have affected performance as the first quarter of the game was littered with handling errors, hampering any decent attacking play.
With the game (and the players) warming up, Withy gained the slightest of upper hands and began to pressure inside the South Molton 22’. The visiting defence survived a string of penalties deep inside the danger zone to eventually clear the ball.
This flurry of activity proved to be the last real play with the half with the team changing ends with the game still scoreless.
After the break, South Molton found the decisive breakthrough from a scrum 5m out from the line. The visitors extended their lead three minutes later, while Withies had strong claims for a penalty try waved away to complete a frustrating afternoon.
