Following numerous weather postponements earlier in the year, Exmouth Town Veterans have faced a packed run in to end the season, playing three games in less than a fortnight.

First up was an away game to Adams FC in Exeter.

Exmouth started brightly, fashioning an early chance that marksman Sam Schaefli flashed from range just over the crossbar.

Adams was dangerous on the break, forcing Exmouth keeper Matt Carter into several smart saves during the first half an hour.

Exmouth’s persistent probing paid off when Paul McMahon surged forwards from defence and found Schaefli, who cut back and curled the ball in the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Exmouth doubled their lead early in the second half, when a Richie Higham corner was met by a Schaefli header that soared into the roof of the net.

The win was secured when a defence splitting pass from the excellent Nick Davey was latched onto by Matthew Lyne-Ley who coolly slotted past the Adams keeper to make the final score 3-0 to Town.

St Martins visited Exmouth, with the home side starting in a dominant mood.

Schaefli ran onto an exquisite Dean Hepburn ball in from the right to open the scoring, while Ben Stephenson’s superb forward play was rewarded with a brace before half time.

Exmouth became even more expansive in the second half, running out 8-0 winners following Schaefli’s third and fourth goals, an excellent bottom corner finish from Richie Higham and an elegant 30 yard curler into the top corner from Darryl Nicholas.

Exmouth Journal: Adam Turner

Town’s busy period concluded with a midweek evening away fixture against title chasing rivals Stoke Hill.

The match started frantically, with tackles flying in and neither side dominating possession.

Stoke Hill took the lead midway through the first half through a world class direct freekick that crashed in off the post.

Exmouth settled after this setback, and were soon level through an Adam Turner wonder goal that would have graced any top level match.

Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, Turner flicked the ball over the oncoming defender, then snaked his way past three defenders before clinically finishing past the diving goalkeeper.

With the scores level Exmouth took control, creating chance after chance, finally making the breakthrough when the impressive Stu Morgan lofted a header over the keeper following a raking pinpoint cross from Richie Higham.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Exmouth playing tidy football and Stoke Hill using quick, direct balls to try to unsettle the Exmouth defence.

The back four of Paul McMahon, Carl Wilson, Dave Ayling and James Nicholls performed admirably, until against the run of play, Stoke Hill equalised from a long punt up field that was met with a dominant header from their striker.

Exmouth had a third goal disallowed and remained calm in the face of several controversial offside decisions.

Their positive attitude and football paid off, when Stu Morgan was released from midfield, rounding the onrushing goalkeeper and calmly slotting into the net from a wide angle.

With 15 minutes to go Exmouth changed formation and frustrated the home side with tenacious tackling and tireless running in midfield from Chris Smith, Adam Bond and Matt Williams.

After a period of excellent game management, the referee blew the final whistle after two minutes of injury time, with Exmouth finishing as deserved 3-2 winners.

Town now sit equal top of the table with Stoke Hill and have a game in hand.
