Madeira Bowling Club saw a dramatic defeat in an exceptionally hot contest, as Tiverton West End BC claimed victory in arguably the most gruelling game of the season to date.
At one point during the game, which was held on July 19, it seemed that Tiverton may secure all four rinks, but the home side narrowly clawed back to finish two each - though the overall score was tipped in Tiverton's favour, 70-53.
Club vice captain David Macaulay led a Madeira rink that won more ends, playing alongside Janet Grundy, Adrian Bovey and Lyn Hambly.
Unfortunately, two Madeira rinks only secured victories by a single shot each.
Misfortune continued on July 21 as Madeira hoped to bounce back against Yate & District Bowls Club.
Those hopes were dashed when halfway through the match Madeira found themselves trailing by a substantial 17 shots.
Post-tea, Yate and District maintained their momentum, extending the lead to win the overall match 106-83.
Despite the day's poor performance, David Macaulay and his rink managed a respectable draw of 16 shots each.
The saving grace for Madeira came from Mike Ball, Chris Fox, and Lawrie Humphries, led by skip Charlie Darke, who achieved a 5-shot victory over their opponents, standing out as Madeira's top dogs in an otherwise underwhelming performance.
