Badminton star Ben Lane will be competing in the men’s doubles with Sean Vendy this Saturday, Sunday and Monday (July 27,28 and 29).
The pair are in Group A and will first take on Tokyo bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia - the match is scheduled for 9.10am on Saturday, July 27.
The Malaysian duo lost to Lane and Vendy in their last encounter, at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The following day Lane and Vendy will play the world no.1 pair Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China.
Lane and Vendy defeated them at the 2022 French Open but the Chinese pair have won both meetings since.
The match is scheduled for 9.10am on Sunday, July 28.
Their third Group A match is against Adam Dong and Nyl Yakura of Canada, scheduled for Monday, July 29 at 7.20pm. The Canadian pair were also beaten by Lane and Vendy at the Commonwealth Games two summers ago.
Ben Lane, aged 27, was born in Kingston-upon-Thames and brought up in Exmouth, where he attended the Community College. He started playing badminton as a child, inspired by his mother, Suzanne Louis-Lane, who was a double national champion.
By the age of nine he was a star junior player, and went on to represent England at the Commonwealth Games in 2018, winning the mixed team bronze.
Lane has been playing doubles with Sean Vendy for a decade. The pair had their big breakthrough in 2021, becoming the first English male pair to reach the last four at the World Tour Finals in Thailand in January and taking the Orleans Masters title in March.
Lane and Vendy went out in the group stage at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 but gained valuable experience.
He has said winning a gold in Paris with Vendy would be ‘a dream’ and ‘the biggest achievement we could achieve in our sport’.
