Despite a disappointing field performance, Topsham St James 2ndXI secured a decisive win, beating Teignmouth and Shaldon 3rd XI.
The game, which was played at Exeter University ground on August 17, 2024, saw Topsham battle through a lethargic start that resulted in what could be their worst performance of the season.
Originally invited to field first, Topsham's usually sharp wicket-taking edge was notably absent.
This allowed Teignmouth's Skipper Glyn Ballman to contribute 18 to an opening partnership of 46 with Kevin Jones.
Together with 13-year-old Bobby Murfin, who gave an impressively mature performance, they notched up another 47.
Murfin's top score of 49 was an indication of great talent; many believe he won't be playing third-team cricket for much longer.
Topsham veteran Nick McAleer was a standout performer among the bowlers, returning figures of 1-22 from his eight overs.
Although Sam Luddington, the leading wicket-taker, was not at his best, he still produced 2-38.
Meanwhile, George Glanvill chipped in with 1-25.
Topsham's batting performance was much stronger, with stand-in skipper Jon Hull kicking things off with a hard-fought 8.
Neil Shillabeer, who has been in superb form this season, supported the team with thoughtful innings, building a total of 45 off 111 balls allowing the team to reach 179-3.
One of these stroke players, Howard Smalley, contributed a swift 66 off just 60 balls, driving the side towards victory.
The Teignmouth bowlers, while only taking two wickets, managed to apply constant pressure throughout the game.
James Waggot and Teague Mayhew bowled a commendable opening spell, supported well by their team.
The fielding was described as the polar opposite of Topsham's, while it was keen, enthusiastic, motivated and determined, it was ultimately no match for Topsham's greater firepower.
Topsham secured 18 points from the game to Teignmouth's 5, leaving the team needing just three more points from their remaining two games to be assured of promotion, and another fourteen to secure the divisional championship.
This win, though not without its challenges, therefore leaves Topsham on a firm path towards their championship goals.
