Ottery St. Mary pulled off the result of the day in the Devon League by inflicting only the second defeat of the season on the University of Exeter.

It was a hard-working, disciplined performance from the Otters who soaked up plenty of pressure, especially in the second half and were always dangerous hitting the students on the break

Both goals came from Seb Copp, the first following good work from Ethan Matthews and the second involving both Matthews and Jake Williams.

University had plenty of possession after the break but Ottery, with Sam Pyne prominent in midfield, defended in depth and restricted them to ineffective long-range shooting.

Goal scoring hero Copp picked up the Man of the Match award.

Budleigh Salterton, still without their full squad of players, were caught cold at Elmore where the home side were front from the second minute.

The visitors fell further behind soon afterwards when the Budleigh defence failed to deal with a long throw-in before Oscar Walsh fired wide in the visitors’ best chance of the first half.

There was a good deal fortuitous about Elmore’s third goal, a strong defensive header out from a free-kick hitting the back of one of the home side’s players before ending up in the net.

Late pressure from Budleigh did get some reward when Walsh went through to net a late consolation following good work by Sam Haynes.

It finished all square on 1-1 at the Furzebrake although Beer Albion had enough chances in the second half to have taken all three points from fourth placed Topsham Town.

The visitors took the lead midway through the first half with their only shot on goal, a stunning effort from Nathan May who brought the ball down on his chest before volleying home.

Beer, attacking down the slope, had their chances but were denied several times with good blocks from visiting goalkeeper Rob Raddon.

The home side were to dominate long spells of the second half and they deservedly levelled when Ollie Binion fired in a superb shot from distance that flew into the top corner.

There were then good opportunities for Albion to win the game but some resolute defending and good goalkeeping from Raddon kept them at bay.

Man of the Match award went to Binion for his well-disciplined performance in midfield complete with a class finish.

On Saturday (October 19th), all three teams play away. Ottery St. Mary are at Thorverton, Budleigh Salterton at Bere Alston United and Beer at Plymstock United.
