The new British point-to-point season is set to start this month featuring 130 meetings across the UK.

The first fixture in the Devon and Cornwall Area will be hosted by the Dunsmore Racing Club at Dunsmore near Silverton, on on November 10.

This event marks the beginning of 22 scheduled fixtures in the region until June next year.

For those new to point-to-point racing, it resembles professional National Hunt racing but offers a more relaxed atmosphere.

The sport provides a family-friendly day out at a reasonable cost.

Spectators can enjoy good views of the parade ring and the jumps up close.

Point-to-point racing is seen as one of the last remaining amateur sports, yet it is properly regulated by the British Horse Racing Authority.

The Point to Point Authority oversees the sport, ensuring it meets the necessary standards.

Most point-to-point races cover three miles and include about 18 jumps.

This form of racing serves as a training ground for many jockeys, with over 70 per cent of those currently riding under rules having begun their careers in point-to-point events.

Many famous winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National have also come from this route.

Pony racing will be featured at some meetings starting in February, providing a platform for aspiring young riders.

Current champion jockey Harry Cobden began his journey in pony racing.

Betting opportunities abound, with numerous bookmakers present at the events.

Each fixture includes various trade stands, and attendees can enjoy food and drinks or bring their own picnic.

Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a lead.

While there is no strict dress code, outdoor clothing is recommended for the winter, alongside suitable footwear.

Upcoming fixtures in Devon and Cornwall to note include the Dunsmore Racing Club on November 10, with the first race provisionally set for 12.30pm, although this may change based on entries.
