Withycombe Rugby Club triumphed over Dartmouth with a score of 15-11 in a thrilling match at Raleigh Park.
The match was significant as it was not only a replay of the abandoned season opener but also the quarter-final of the Devon Junior Cup.
Withycombe started the game, playing uphill in the first half.
Both teams showed equal strength as they contested possession.
Withycombe had a chance to score early on but their kick at goal hit the uprights, allowing Dartmouth to clear the ball.
As the first half progressed, Withycombe pushed into the Dartmouth 22.
Despite their efforts, they could not break through Dartmouth's strong defence.
After nearly thirty minutes of play, Withycombe finally scored when Lee Jackson finished off a series of well-coordinated phases.
Dartmouth responded quickly.
They pressured Withycombe and, with a penalty advantage, looked to score.
Although they were initially denied a try, they managed to get the ball over the line shortly after, tying the score at 5-5.
Withycombe and Dartmouth fought hard, but just before half-time, Dartmouth took a narrow lead with a successful penalty kick, ending the half at 5-8.
The second half began with Dartmouth extending their lead by three points through another penalty just four minutes in.
However, Withycombe rallied and soon found themselves deep in Dartmouth territory.
An overthrown lineout allowed Withycombe’s Player-Coach Adam Clayton to charge towards the try line, regaining the lead at 12-11 after Tom Cooke’s conversion was successful.
Withycombe maintained their pressure and looked for more points.
Cooke seized the opportunity for a penalty kick, extending Withycombe's lead to 15-11.
The final ten minutes were tense, with Dartmouth pressing hard.
Withycombe's defence stood firm, forcing errors from their opponents and eventually clearing the ball from their half.
The match ended with a score of 15-11 in favour of Withycombe.
This victory not only earned them 4 vital league points, placing them 8th in the table but also secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Devon Junior Cup.
Withycombe will next prepare for a derby match against Exmouth Quins on November 9, where they hope to continue their upward momentum in the league.
